❄️ A Winter Escape to Mount Hotham: Where Roads Heal, Snow Whispers & Time Slows Down
❄️ Losing Myself in the Snowy Alps: Our Winter Escape to Mount Hotham
Melbourne is blessed with several snow destinations, each offering its own charm of white landscapes, scenic roads, and cozy food stops. Last winter, we chose Mount Hotham — mainly because we had heard it’s less crowded compared to other snow mountains. And honestly, that turned out to be the best decision.
We visited during the first week of August 2025, choosing a weekday, which made a huge difference. The mountain wasn’t packed, the atmosphere felt calm, and nature truly had the spotlight.
🚗 The Journey: Where the Trip Truly Begins
The journey from Melbourne to Mount Hotham was nothing short of breathtaking. We drove via Bright, and every kilometre felt like a slow transition from city life into pure alpine magic.
Winding roads, tall trees, mountain curves, and scenic viewpoints — at one point, I completely forgot all my worries. I felt lost in nature, in the views, and in the silence that only mountains can offer. It was one of those rare moments where your mind simply pauses.
⚠️ Important Tip: Snow Chains Are Mandatory
Before heading to Mount Hotham, one thing you must not ignore is snow safety.
Carrying snow chains is mandatory, even if you’re driving a 4WD vehicle. We made sure to carry chains for our tyres — better to be prepared than stressed later.
Along with snow chains, snow-protective clothing and proper snow shoes are equally important. We rented our snow jackets, pants, gloves, and shoes from the city itself, as rentals near the snow mountains tend to be more expensive. Renting in advance not only saved us money but also time once we reached the mountain.
Thankfully, the weather was amazing that day. Clear skies, crisp air, and bright views — although I was secretly hoping to witness snowfall. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen this time… but maybe next winter 🤍
Before visiting, always check the official Mount Hotham Alpine Resort website for entry fees, weather updates, and road conditions.
☕ A Mandatory Stop: Beechworth Bakery via Bright
Going via Bright automatically means one thing — Beechworth Bakery is a must-stop.
While heading towards Mount Hotham, we didn’t stop as we wanted to reach before it got too late. But on our way back, we spent some time in Bright, roaming around the town, soaking in its relaxed vibe, and of course indulging in coffee, sweets, and pies.
🏔️ Snowy Peaks & Alpine Magic
As we got closer to Mount Hotham, the scenery transformed dramatically. Snow-covered mountains started appearing, alpine views stretched endlessly, and everything felt unreal — like a postcard come to life.
We even made a snowman (because of course, you have to!), clicked countless pictures, and created memories that will stay with us forever.
Yes, we actually carried carrots with us 🥕 — because you can’t meet snow without making a snowman, right?
🧀 Snowshoe to Cheese Fondue – A Magical Night Experience
One of the highlights of our trip was the Snowshoe to Cheese Fondue – Dinner Experience — and let me tell you, it was totally worth it.
Walking through the snow at night, surrounded by silence, soft lights, and mountains under the stars felt magical. The night view was mesmerising, something we hadn’t fully expected but deeply enjoyed.
❄️ Hypedome & Igloo Experience – Plan Ahead!
We were keen to book the HYPEDOME – Overnight Experience (including dinner), but when we searched for availability in June 2025, everything was already sold out. It’s an extremely popular experience and gets booked out very early in the winter season.
Unfortunately, we weren’t aware of this far enough in advance.
💡 Tip:
If you’re planning to stay overnight at Mount Hotham in a Hypedome or Igloo, make sure to book well ahead of time or join the waiting list as early as possible, especially during peak winter months.
In our case, neither option worked out, so we stayed at a motel in Harrietville.
🏨 Stay at Harrietville: Simple, Cozy & Worth It
Our stay in Harrietville turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The motel was:
Affordable
Comfortable for a one-night stay
Served amazing food
Had a warm, cozy ambience after a cold day
Sometimes, unplanned stays become the most memorable — and this was one of them.
🤍 Final Thoughts
This trip to Mount Hotham was more than just a winter getaway.
It was about slowing down, breathing in fresh alpine air, losing myself in nature, and coming back refreshed.
No snowfall, no luxury stay — yet the experience felt complete.
Sometimes, all you need is a scenic road, good food, snow under your boots, and mountains around you.
And Mount Hotham delivered exactly that 💖
